Frequently asked questions

A quick guide to the games, puzzles and playing with friends. Can’t find an answer? Write to [email protected].

What is Compass of the Day?

A free daily game about the countries of the world: four daily games, practice, puzzles and playing with friends. It runs in the browser on phones and computers — nothing to install, no sign-up.

Does it cost anything?

No, it is completely free. There are no paid hints or extra attempts.

Do I need to sign up?

No. Your progress is stored in your browser. To play with friends you only need a nickname you make up yourself — we never ask for an email or phone number.

Which games are there every day?

Four: Country of the Day — guess the country in 5 tries with hints; Capital of the Day; Flag of the Day — the flag is hidden under 6 tiles; and Facts — 10 statements, and you decide whether each is true or false.

When does a new game appear?

At midnight UTC. Your local time is shown in the rules. The daily answer is the same for everyone.

Can I play past days?

Yes, the archive has past Country of the Day puzzles with answers and explanations.

Why isn’t my answer accepted?

Pick the country from the suggestion list. Common alternative names are accepted too. If a name isn’t in the list, the attempt isn’t used up.

What do the distance and arrow show?

After a wrong answer you see the distance between the centres of your country and the secret one, and the arrow shows which way to look.

What is a streak?

How many days in a row you have won this game; each game has its own streak. Miss a day or lose, and the streak starts again.

How do I keep my statistics?

Statistics and streaks are stored in your browser, so play in the same browser and don’t clear this site’s data. Statistics can’t be moved to another device yet — the QR code moves only your friends profile.

What is practice?

Endless questions of three kinds: flags, capitals and facts. No limits, personal records, and a puzzle piece for every correct answer.

What are puzzle pieces?

Your “wallet” for building puzzles. New players get 10 pieces. You earn them in practice and in games with friends (+1 for every correct answer) and in the daily games (+5 for a win in each game, once a day). Facts also gives +1 for every correct answer.

What kinds of puzzles are there?

Three kinds with 195 levels each: flags, country maps with a dot for the capital, and landmarks. Every attempt to place a piece uses one piece. The wallet is shared by all puzzles, and an unfinished puzzle is saved so you can finish it later.

What is the passport?

Your collection: the countries you guessed in the daily games on a map, plus achievements and puzzle progress.

Where do the maps and photos come from?

Maps come from Natural Earth (public domain), photos from Wikimedia Commons under free licences. The author and licence are shown under every photo.

How do I play with friends?

Open the Friends section, pick a nickname and send a friend your invite link. Once they accept, create a table and call the friends who are online.

Why can’t I find someone by nickname?

That’s on purpose: there is no player search and no public player list. You can only become friends through a link, so there are no strangers and no spam. Only your friends can see you.

Does my nickname have to be unique?

No. Friends are told apart by internal IDs, and friends with the same nickname by the colour of their circle. You can change your nickname at any time. It must be 2 to 20 characters long, without links.

Can I send my invite link to several people?

Yes, many people can become your friends with one link, for example from a group chat. If the link ended up in the wrong place, tap “New link”: the old one stops working, and the friends you already have stay.

How do I remove or block a friend?

In your friend list tap “⋯” next to their nickname and choose “Remove friend” or “Block”. A blocked player can’t add you again with your link.

How does a table game work?

A table seats 2 to 8 players. A game has 10 questions on one topic — flags, capitals or facts — the same for everyone. You have 15 seconds per answer (20 for facts). A correct answer earns 500 points plus up to 500 for speed. After each question you see the right answer and who scored what. The player with the most points wins.

Can I play with friends in other countries?

Yes. Everyone sees the questions in the language they chose on the site — English, Russian or Armenian — while the game is shared.

My friend doesn’t see my table invitation

An invitation appears only if your friend has the site open right now. Otherwise send them the table link — it works while the table is open. A table closes by itself after 30 minutes without play.

How do I move my friends to another phone or computer?

In Friends, tap “Show QR code” and scan it with the other device, or open the link there. The code works once and expires in 10 minutes. After that your profile works on both devices.

What happens to my friends if I clear my browser?

The profile disappears from that device. If you connected another device earlier, you can bring the profile back from there with a new QR code. When account sign-in arrives, your profile and friends will move to it automatically.

What data do you keep about me?

For Friends, Cloudflare’s servers keep only a random ID, your nickname and your friend list. We never ask for your name, email or phone and don’t store IP addresses. The “Delete my data” button erases everything at once. Everything else stays in your browser only.

Is there a leaderboard?

There is no public ranking, but the Friends section has statistics: your wins and points and your friends’ results in games played together — separately for flags, capitals and facts, and for all games. You can sort it by wins or by points.

Can I install the game as an app?

Yes: use the “Install the app” button at the bottom of the page; on iPhone, tap Share → “Add to Home Screen” in Safari. Pages you have already opened work offline, but playing with friends needs the internet.
